Novel Review: Fremont and Sidney: A Story About a Bot and Its Boy by Thomas A. Wilson

Fremont and Sidney: A Story About a Bot and Its Boy (The Corebot Trilogy Book 1)

Awakening

Buried under an ancient battlefield and left for scrap, Combat Reconnaissance Robot N804rL awoke to a world it didn't understand. The heavily damaged quantum machine needed answers. On its quest for clarity, a teen boy named Sidney, a runaway girl named Twila, and a domestic service robot named Khalid join the adventure to make sense of it all.

In this clean, faith-friendly story, these unlikely friends fight against greedy gangsters, corrupt politicians, and a crumbling society in desperate need of a fresh start.

Fremont and Sidney is a fast-paced tale that takes an honest look at overcoming adversity--even when it hurts.

Perspective by Peter:

I volunteered to review this novel upon the author offering free copies. I like to support debut authors by reading their novels and promoting them on this blog through various means other than a review.

This is one very entertaining novel. I can see young adults loving this tale and those who like a coming of age theme. Wilson definitely knows how to tell a story! It is well-constructed. I felt as if I was in this futuristic world of many decades in our future. Very regimented and almost like Big Brother is watching and tracking you if you break a law. It is not a life that I would like to live in but there are some hints that our modern society is heading towards this.

Readers will find themselves endeared to Sidney and Twila. Maybe out of empathy that they are street kids and have suffered the loss of their parents and/or siblings and forging a life on the streets in a system and society that neglects them and pretends they don't exist. I was also endeared to Angie, Twila's case worker. The only bright hope that there is at least a few people around that do care and what to see their charges in a safe and secure place with the resources at her disposable.

I can also see readers taking a liking to Fremont, despite this robot being an AI (artificial intelligence). Or is it also that the bots in this novel are deemed as sentient beings?

Wilson explains how the robots became "tethered". Why is it, that I can see this happening in our future? We seem to be afraid or technology running amok and taking over our lives, but on the other hand, we seem to be embracing technology and slowly accepting how it impacts on these same lives. Even the younger generations cannot cope when the Internet is down, or they are denied access for whatever reason. And Heaven forbid, that they lose or misplace their phone!! Their world has come to an end!! However, those young readers of this series will be jealous how every person has access to the Internet and "screens" whether you are a street kid or the elite (wealthy).

It is on this subject of sentient AIs, that Wilson explores that they could be the recipient of the saving grace of God. Although the scene where Fremont accepts the invitation of an Altar Call during a Church type service, it is not defined that he accepted God's offer of salvation. From that scene onwards, Fremont seems to add Biblical verses and even Biblical wisdom. So what did happen when Hattie prayed over Fremont?

Hattie began to teach. She talked about good news and Jesus of Nazareth and the Great Commission and missionaries around the world. Sidney checked, and rechecked, his screen. Toward the end of the talk, Ms. Hattie invited people forward to receive prayer. Sidney was grateful because that meant she was almost done (the woman sure could talk). N804rL rose and started clunking down the aisle. every eye in the group was on the robot. Sidney was horrified.

Ms. Hattie looked confused when the machine approached but listened as the Corebot leaned close and spoke. Sidney watched as she nodded her head affirmatively, placed her hand on the robot's back, and started to pray. She paused and appreared to ask the robot a question. The machine seemed to answer. Sidney wondered what was going on. Hattie prayed again.

The robot lifted its arm, palm up, about waist high. A man, who appeared to be homeless, wiped tears from his eyes as he watched the scene. A woman to Sidney's left leaned in and asked, "What's your robot doing?"

Sidney answered, "Praying, I think."

"What kind of robot prays?" the woman replied.

"A broken one," Sidney said.

When N804rL returned, Sidney hustled the unit out the door. Hattie's gaze followed them.

"What was all that about?" the teen asked.

"I have new mission parameters," said the bot.

Wilson is being very game here suggesting/implying that an AI (albeit sentient, but who defines this?) can become a true Christian. It pushes the boundary of Biblical theory on this. I can see much debate happening here. This review is not the arena for this. However, it would be interesting to see why Wilson has gone down this path. But, it could be seen as if Fremont's "conversion" may just be that the bot has been upgraded to being a spiritual repository of Biblical wisdom and encouragement, a supernatural App integrated into his core processors.

Despite this, Wilson has embedded other Biblical themes in this novel and it seems that this will be continued in future volumes. To quote him:

I wanted to offer an exploration of coming of age and coming to faith where things aren’t tidy--kind of like real life. The redemptive storyline plays out over the entire series, not just book one.

I did appreciate the humour that Wilson has included. Here is an example, when Sidney meets Fremont (N804rL):

"Do not be afraid," N804rL spoke.

"Wwhatt, what?" Sidney replied.

"We come in peace," the Corebot continued. "And I'm sorry to say, somewhat in pieces

Wilson has identified a method of communication here, in including humour. Teenagers and young adults keep their attention engaged when humour is added. I bet Wilson could not restrain himself from adding this familiar one-liner when it came to Sidney meeting Fremont. What better phrase than, "We come in peace,". Let me guess, Wilson has always wanted to say that? :)

The different story arcs all come together at the end and are tied up nicely, however, the foundation is laid for what is going to happen in Book 2 relating to Twila, which leads to the title of the next novel, Twila and Fremont: A Story About a Girl and Her Bot (The Corebot Trilogy Book 2).

I do enjoy a story about teenagers or young adults being the underdog, outsmarting corrupt and devious adults who have nefarious motivations. Throw in a couple of wannabes as well and you have suspense, action and adventure and entertainment. Wilson has done this well and I look forward to this continuing in the next novels (that are confirmed, Book 3 will later in 2022). The end of this story arc adds further questioning of why people are the way they are, why they make others suffer, take advantage of them and I am sure this will be further explored in Book 2. As Sidney states,

"The world is really broken, Fremont!"

And again, Fremont answers with some Biblical wisdom and encouragement to Sidney from the Biblical book of Lamentations (Ch 3: 19-22) authored by Jeremiah. Very appropriate to Sidney despair over the state of the world and the broken nature of the human race.

The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words. I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease.

This author has a strong entry into the arena of Christian fiction. I am sure it will be a hit with teens and young adults.

Readers and reviews are an author’s best asset, so I encourage any reader, to consider reading Fremont and Sidney and then submit a review on Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest (or any other social media platform you subscribe to).

Reviews help promote an author’s novel to potential readers and encourage the author to keep writing. Reviews also help get the author’s message (and God’s message) to the reader, who may need encouragement and support in their lives while being entertained by the story.

Interview with Novelist Ben Wolf and the Re-Release of Blood for Blood.

One of my favourite novels is Blood for Blood, the debut novel by Ben Wolf. I reviewed this in 2015. It deals with a very unique topic, "What if a vampire got saved?" Very speculative and controversial in Christian circles! So in 2015, I felt it was worth interviewing Ben to see what he had to say about this topic.

Today, I re-visit this interview with updates since the recent re-release and its re-vamping (Ben's original pun!). What a great new cover as well! It will also give a new generation of readers the background behind this compelling, edgy, speculative novel.

So sit back and read about Ben, the author (Part 1 of the interview), then about the revamp of Blood for Blood (Part two).

First up, what is this novel about? Read on:

Blood for Blood.

Is his soul lost forever?

Or can she show him the light?

Raven Worth hunts the living every night. Their blood is his sustenance, and his appetite is insatiable. He is cursed to live this way forever—immortal, yet never truly fulfilled.

But when Raven stumbles upon a traveling evangelist and his family at a big tent revival, he finds himself enraptured not only by their message of hope but also by Calandra, the evangelist’s beautiful daughter.

Betrothed to another man with her parents’ blessing, Calandra cannot deny her sudden attraction to Raven. Though she should fear Raven because of what he is, she finds herself hopelessly drawn to him more with each approaching sunset.

As Raven and Calandra grapple with their feelings and Raven’s newfound faith, an ongoing manhunt for a dangerous criminal sends shockwaves tearing through their lives. Soon they each face a series of heartbreaking choices that will determine their fates forever.

Can Raven break the chains of his dark past and be reborn in the light?

Will Calandra remain on the lifelong path her parents have laid out for her?

Or will the two of them join together at the dawn of a new day, eternally changed?

Blood for Blood is Ben Wolf’s award-winning debut novel, originally published in 2014 and now re-vamped. This blend of classic vampire lore, romance, action, and faith elements in the historical setting of 1885 creates a gripping story that will leave you breathless. Get it now.

Okay Ben, thanks for stopping by! How about we start with you telling us a little about yourself?

Thanks for having me, Peter. Since the last time we did this interview, I now have 20+ books published across a wide range of genres including sci-fi, fantasy, horror, young adult, and children’s books. Blood for Blood is a relaunch of my debut novel by the same name.

When not writing, I practice Brazilian jiu-jitsu, play video games, and enjoy playing board games with friends. I also cook a pretty mean cheesesteak.

What inspired you to become an author and has it always been a desire of yours to write?

I realized early on that I loved stories. Authors like Frank Peretti wrote wonderful, imaginative tales that swept me away, and one day I decided I was going to write a book at some point.

Since then, I’ve been writing goofy and action-packed stories. I finished my first novel in college. It’s terrible and will never see the light of day, but I learned from it and have gone on to publish several more books since then.

What tools have you found most successful in advertising/marketing yourself and your books?

I’m not great at marketing my books online. I’ll be the first to admit that. However, I’m really good at promoting and selling my books at live events.

I’ve come to the point now where I’m doing 30+ shows each year. It’s a lot of work schlepping those books to each show, but I have a lot of fun doing the shows themselves. I get to interact with readers in real-time, and they almost always become lifelong fans.

What has surprised you the most about becoming an author?

It’s a lot harder than I thought, and it has taken longer than I thought to get to the point where I’m earning enough income from writing for it to even be considered a part-time job.

Anyone can tell a story (and I really do believe that), and a lot of us can write those stories down and have them make sense, but writing them in a way that achieves that “easy” criteria and is entertaining for readers is another matter altogether.

It’s hard work to make everything work the way it should, and even then, I don’t think I can ever make a novel perfect. That doesn’t stop me from trying, though, and I’m getting better with each subsequent book.

How has writing and being an author impacted your relationship with Jesus Christ?

Writing has both brought me closer to and separated me from Christ. I’ve come closer in that when I’m writing a story like Blood for Blood because it forces me to recognize and grapple with deep spiritual questions, and so that challenges my faith.

On a practical level, I’m prone to being busy and staying busy 95% of my waking hours, so I struggle to make the necessary time to spend growing my relationship with Christ. It’s a double-edged sword, and I’m still trying to find a workable balance there.

Obviously becoming an author has been a huge accomplishment for you, but can you tell us what a major goal of yours is outside of the world of writing?

I have dozens of goals for my life, writing-related and otherwise. Outside of the world of writing, I’d love to travel abroad more. I visited Australia when I was a kid, and I’d really like to go back. I’d also like to visit Italy, England, and Japan in the near future, in no particular order.

Aside from travel, I have my sights set on becoming a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu someday. It’s a discipline unlike many other martial arts in that it takes a long time to achieve that rank, and the work is consistent, difficult, and challenging the entire time.

So we know you like to write, but can you divulge to your fans out there what’s something that you like to do in your downtime when you're not writing?

I mentioned above that I’m big into jiu-jitsu. I’d love to have more time for that, honestly, but my writing/editing/live events schedule keeps me from training more than a couple of times per week. That’s how it is right now, anyway.

I occasionally steal time to play video games, too. My recent go-to is Overwatch. I’m good at it, but not great, and that’s fine. I don’t have any aspirations to try to make a career of it.

Do you think there is anything significantly different about Christian fiction, as opposed to secular fiction?

Yes. But also, no. Great quality fiction that strikes a nerve will sell and find an audience no matter if it’s Christian fiction or secular. The Left Behind series is the preeminent example of that.

With that said, authors need to target their audiences more specifically. If you’re writing for a Christian audience, give them what they want and expect. If you’re writing for a secular audience, the rules are different, and you have to know them and adhere to them in order to find success there.

This is true of every genre. They all have different rules and expectations that readers will expect. Learn them, and your chances of success in finding your audience will increase dramatically.

Your debut novel, Blood for Blood, is very edgy and speculative. That hasn’t changed in the re-released version. At the time you originally published it, this was a relatively new, evolving, not very well-accepted or understood Christian fiction genre (and one I love and read the most in). How did you come to write in this genre first and not in the safer, mainstream Christian fiction genres?

This hearkens back to my early influences in life, particularly Frank Peretti and later, Robert Liparulo. I’ve always loved and enjoyed speculative fiction in its many forms, so it made sense to create in that genre.

What’s more, the stories that have come to me have been primarily speculative in nature, or at the very least, edgy, like you said. I don’t often get ideas for romance novels or historical novels, but I think up speculative ideas all the time. And as far as them being edgy goes, for me, that’s a must, because it makes the story more interesting and, in some ways, more realistic.

Nowadays, though, I actually aim most of my fiction at the general market. My stuff is TOO out there and TOO edgy for most Christian readers and publishers. On top of that, I’ve seen a lot of Christian authors successfully publishing general market books and finding their audiences, so that inspired me to aim for a larger audience (compared to the market for Christian speculative fiction, which is tiny).

How did B4B come about?

I actually didn't come up with the concept for Blood for Blood. At a writers conference several years ago, my friend and fellow writer Matt Sheehy mentioned how hilarious it would be if a vampire got saved. Maybe a Christian vampire could help out with a tent revival, and maybe he'd have to use a hammer and big wooden stakes to secure the tent to the ground.

The juxtaposition of the vampire using tools traditionally used to kill his kind to secure a tent to advance the Kingdom of God struck me, and the entire plot for my novel (well, almost all of it) blossomed in my head. I asked Matt for permission to write the book, and he gladly granted it.

What kind of reaction were you hoping to receive from readers of B4B?

I had hoped for readers to do two things: 1. love it and 2. buy lots of copies. Fortunately, the readers have loved it. Now I’m just waiting for the hundreds of thousands of book sales to follow.

The first run of the book garnered lots of positive reviews, and I even won the OCW Cascade Award for the book in 2015. At the time, that was validation that I ought to keep writing. Now my validation comes from hearing from readers who have loved my books.

I noticed that Luco, the pastor, is Italian. That stood out for me and I wondered where that came from? Not that it makes any difference to the story, but for some reason, it stood out to me. I also then realized if he is Italian, why you did not portray him as Catholic (seeing Catholicism is the main denomination in Italy and of those who migrate to other countries). To take this further, do you think B4B would have been just as successful if you had portrayed him as a Catholic priest and had the Biblical response from the Catholic perspective?

Vampire stories typically involve some sort of Catholic influence because both vampirism and Catholicism are rife with symbolism. I chose not to make Luco and his family Catholic for several reasons: 1. the vampirism/Catholicism mashup has been done several times. 2. Catholics aren’t known for their tent revivals, and that was a central plot point for the book and for the vampire’s development, so I wanted to keep that in the story.

There are mentions throughout the book as to why Luco and his family wouldn’t be Catholic in the story despite that being incredibly unlikely given his Italian heritage, but I never outrightly explain why, either. Some things in fiction are better left unexplained.

As to B4B’s success, if I’d made them Catholic, I think it could have been successful, but it has been done and overdone before as I said. I’m not from a Catholic background, so I chose instead to use my evangelical background to inform their characters instead, and I think it worked out well.

Why did you set this novel in the 1800s? Was it to add to the mystique of the whole idea of vampires?

I set the novel in the late 1800s primarily because I had just finished writing a historical western novel set in 1850, so I knew the time period, the terrain, and the type of people of that era pretty well.

The other contributing factor was that other more recent vampire stories have taken place in modern times, and I wanted to present B4B differently. I think the added mystique of the vampires was a benefit of the time period choice for sure.

I am not sure if vampires exist or if this is just part of centuries-old mythology. From researching vampire lore for B4B, has your research convinced you of their existence or made you consider that they could exist? The Bible seems to be rather silent on their existence.

In all of my research, I didn’t see any evidence that suggested that actual bloodsucking undead vampires existed. There are some interesting coincidences, yes, but I believe they (vampires) reside squarely in the realm of fiction along with zombies, werewolves, and anything else that counts as undead.

I don’t believe they exist, but I do believe in supernatural forces both good and evil. I also have a degree in pastoral studies, and I’m pretty familiar with the Bible, but like you, I haven’t found any indication that vampires exist in real life.

After reading B4B, it seems to me that Luco’s and Garrett’s attitudes toward the question of whether a vampire can be saved most likely would reflect what most Christians would feel. Some would believe like Luco that God can and does restore a human's soul and make them a new creation while others like Garrett believe they are unredeemable and cursed for eternity as a vampire/demon. From your point of view, do you think that this is a valid assessment?

I’m so glad you asked this question. Yes, I believe that Christians typically respond in one of the two ways you mentioned to people who aren’t Christians: either they accept them and allow the Holy Spirit to do His work in us, or they reject non-Christians on some level. This rejection can range anywhere from ignoring or distrusting non-Christians to outright telling them that they’re going to Hell and the like.

Jesus taught us to respond to and approach people with love, not with hate, disdain, or negativity. Luco does an excellent job of trying to show Christ’s love to Raven (the vampire) and to everyone around him.

Garrett takes a far different approach, but he has his own set of reasons for responding that way. These two characters take different stances and arrive at very different places regarding Raven’s salvation, but more importantly, they show us the two basic paths that we can take when interacting with anyone: love or negativity.

Choose the former, not the latter.

I was expecting a novel on this topic to have created some controversy, especially among Christians, but from what I have discovered so far, this is not the case. Were you expecting this? If so, did this make you question whether to continue or were you prepared for this?

Actually, yes. I secretly hoped the book would inspire some controversy and really make some people angry—angry enough to tell people how angry it made them. That said, I’m elated that the book has received such solid reviews, and it has really validated me in that I know I can and should keep doing this.

As I said, I had hoped for some controversy, but it hasn’t generated much. I think it just comes down to the belief that vampires don’t exist, so why should this be something we talk about? Had this book been about the transformation of a person of another religion, perhaps, or a type of person with a lifestyle radically different from that of a Christian, then yes, maybe that could have happened. I think people just understand that it’s fiction and thus there’s not much debate on it.

Your fans, I’m sure, want to know if there is more to come. Would you mind giving an exclusive glimpse of what is to come? Does this include any sequels to B4B? I can see how there could be 3 but will need to discuss that with you privately so as not to spoil the plot for those who have not read B4B.

I had once considered writing a sequel (and I intentionally left the door open for one), but I’m not likely to ever write a sequel to this book. It just isn’t going to hit a big-enough audience to justify the time and work. If I do write one, it won’t happen for quite some time.

My next project is a GameLit story (sort of like a video game in a book) in a post-apocalyptic setting. I’m aiming at a large and ravenous audience with the hope of creating something that will appeal to readers and get lots of sales. I’ll probably run a Kickstarter campaign later this year to draw attention to it and increase the likelihood that it’ll “get noticed.”

From what I have elucidated from authors, fight scenes can be one of the most difficult scenes to write and develop. You developed these very realistically. Did you have any difficulty achieving this? I must say that because you achieved this so well, it really did contribute to a wonderful ending to this novel.

Thanks so much, Peter. You should read some of the scenes in my other books!

Action runs in my blood. I’ve seen hundreds of action movies, studied a few different forms of fighting including sword fighting, stage combat techniques, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and a bit of judo and wrestling, and I’ve done a little firearms training, too. I’ve done a lot of research through the years on how fights work.

(By the way, check out Carla Hoch’s book Fight Write: How to Write Believable Fight Scenes if you want to learn how to write better fight scenes.)

The trick (and the hard part) about writing a solid fight scene is threefold: 1. You have to know what you’re talking about on some level; 2. you have to write everything so that causes happen before effects (ex. a guy can’t fall down before he gets punched, etc.), and 3. you have to write it in such a way that it flows well. For me, it’s a challenge to blend these elements together, but it’s one I enjoy quite a bit.

What message do you want readers to obtain from reading B4B?

It really depends on the reader. If you’re a non-Christian reader, know that God loves you and has provided a way for you to live a better life now and have relief in knowing your eternity is sealed via your relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you’re already a Christian, it’s a reminder to all of us that we need to be careful how we treat people who are different from us because our actions, right or wrong, affect non-Christians’ perceptions of who Jesus is. So endeavor to treat everyone with love, be they vampire or not.

The final message is more selfish—if you enjoyed the book, hopefully, the message you get is that Ben Wolf is a good author, and you should check out more of his books. ;)

Did you need to conduct extensive research on vampire lore to create the type of vampires you have portrayed in B4B? I would not know where to start if I was doing this, what type of resources did you use?

Believe it or not, I used Wikipedia as a starting point. It used to have a reputation as a hack site where everyone could just update pages, but the vampire page seems cohesive and may have even been written by one person who really knew his/her stuff. It had a good flow to it and seemed encyclopedic in its approach, so it was very informative.

Beyond that, I consumed a lot of vampire media, ranging from Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Twilight. (Don’t judge—you have to know what people are getting wrong, too.) Couple that with the 20+ years I’ve had of watching/reading vampire media in multiple forms and I had a pretty good basis of knowledge to write this book.

For what it’s worth, I also played Dracula in my senior year of high school in the fall production of, you guessed it, Dracula.

In short, I’ve been a vampire fan for years, so I had lots of great resources to turn to.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?

Stick with me. I intend to thrill you more and more with each successive book. And by all means, tell your friends. My stories will thrill them too.

Do you have any words that you’d like to leave us with?

Vampires or otherwise, “Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

Now let’s get acquainted with Dean and this novel!

Thanks for stopping by Dean and welcome back to Perspective by Peter!

Thanks, Peter and for inviting me back!

My pleasure, Dean! Now, let's start with you telling our readers about your writing journey. How did you get started?

I’ve always enjoyed writing bible studies and journal entries, but I never imagined writing a novel until later in my life. I would get ideas, and then think to myself, “who are you to write a book?” It wasn’t until I shared the idea for the SOTH Initiative with my wife, Nancy, that I got the encouragement I needed to attempt to create the characters and plot line.

What other authors have contributed to you being a writer of edgy, Christian speculative fiction novels? I am definitely influenced by Tom Clancy, Dean Koontz and Frank Peretti. I wanted to create a novel that was edgy and interesting, but one that could be believable as well.

What gave you the inspiration to write The SOTH Initiative?

I feel like God inspired me to write these books. They literally flowed out of me during the 1 1/2 years it took complete both books. I had a desire to introduce people to biblical truths about Jesus, grace, forgiveness and the difference between religion and a relationship with God. I wanted to write that truth in a way that would entertain and engage people no matter where they were on their faith journey.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse that resonates with you? Revelation 21:5 resonates with me at this time in my life, and is a theme running through the book. It reads, “Behold I am making all things new”. God is never finished perfecting His plan for his creation. He is always doing new things in our lives to make a statement to those surrounding us that He is ready to renew our hearts and put a new spirit in us for His glory.

What was the hardest part about writing this book series? The biggest challenges were time and research. I had never written a book before, and I had to be mindful of how the books flowed, how the characters and plot line developed, and how believable the places and people I wrote into the book had to be. I wanted the reader to experience the trip with me and be interested in turning the next page every time. The time it took for research and rewrites made it challenging to do with my day job, and still complete the books in the time I had set. I actually wrote in a pandemic in book two 4 months before the actual first case was reported.

How long did it take you to write the Sect of the Healed Chronicles? I started and stopped writing several times during a challenging time in our lives from 2016-2019. It was the fall of 2019 when I finished book two. It took two more years to do the final rewrite and have the money to pay for the publishing of the books. COVID was rough on our family as I lost my job, my house, and for a while my hope. I learned firsthand how God uses His family to provide protect and encourage his children when they go through hard times.

In my review of Book 1, I stated and showed the parallel in the novel to that of the Parable of the Talents mentioned in Matthew 25:14-30, you agreed with me on this. Had you intentionally constructed the novel to reflect this? Any other parables the novel can be paralleled with? I did not have that particular parable in mind when I wrote, but your suggestion did resonate with me. The SOTH relatives had great gifts from God they were willing to risk their lives for, and they wanted to be used by God even though it would be risky. God is always looking for that one believer who is willing to take whatever gift they have and use it to the max. That is all God is looking for.

In the novels, you have the people healed by Jesus having their DNA changed or enhanced that gives them “superpowers” related to that ailment or condition or body system and this inherited by their lineage through the centuries. At first I was content to leave it there, but then I wondered if this change could be a restoration to the original DNA they were created with before the fall of man (and sin) changed our DNA and allowed disease, sickness and physical ailments to occur. Your thoughts on this? I love that idea! I imagined the people Jesus healed were impacted to the core of their being. This was the God of the universe interacting with them at every level of their being. Each of us experience life through our body, soul and spirit. What happens to one part of us affects all three parts every time. People experiencing the healing power of Jesus could have been restored in every way, which would definitely make an impact on them on all three levels. I love that!

Apart from how showing how people experience a relationship with God vs. a religion, such as those of the Muslim, Catholic, Hindu and other religions, and mysteries, miracles, healing, and biblical truth, forgiveness, hope, grace, what other messages or themes have you included? I reckon these messages and themes are enough for a novel! LOL I agree! The goal of these books is to guide the reader through the theme of God making all things new on a regular basis. We tend to have a life changing experience with Jesus, and in time we slip into taking for granted the amazing relationship we have with the God of the universe! God becomes part of our lives, but not the center of our lives. If we allow God to do it, He will invade our lives and do things that will make people notice. This may not always be comfortable for us, but it will create new life and new dependence on God that will draw us closer and bring Him glory.

Are you expecting any flack, negative comments or accusations that you are criticizing those religions you contrast with Christianity? This could be seen as dangerous ground to cover in a novel even if you are doing it for the right reasons, or just a straightforward comparison. My goal was to use biblical truth to tell a relevant story about God, forgiveness, relationship, and healing. Truth is truth, and sometimes it is challenged and even threatened by those who don’t see it as truth. We live in a relative truth world, where everybody has their own personal truth to meet their own personal desires. These books challenge people to examine what truth they allow to mold them. The books invite people to consider biblical truth that will be relevant, real, and life changing.

Are any of the technology you have depicted being used by both the SOTH, Cleansing Group or CIA your imagination or does in fact exist? I worked hard to make the technical side of the story very believable. I interviewed several IT people and asked them about the possibility of what I was writing. They all told me to go further, that what was really possible was much better or worse, depending on who’s side you were on. I have a friend in the DOD who told me this book was absolutely possible.

Did you find the action scenes of car chases, or fight scenes hard to depict? I am an avid reader of action novels and enjoy action movies. I love the energy you get when you put yourself in the place of the character and take the risks with them. It was this energy I wanted to pass along to the reader as they got into the book.

What research did you have to conduct for the books? I did a lot of research on the cities and history of what I was writing about. I wanted the reader to be able to check on the things they thought could be possible and learn more about the places and people who are real in the book. I in turn learned more about the history and culture of the people I write about, and I was able to communicate that cultural flavor throughout the book.

What take home message would do you like your readers to embrace? That God is real, and that He yearns for a relationship with them that is real, relevant and powerful. I also want readers to be inspired to trust God in the everyday miracles of life as well as the big and famous moments that sometimes come to us. God is always working, and He will invite us into His work if we just listen and obey. It won’t be boring I promise you.

The Sect of the Healed Chronicles is my first publication for public consumption. I felt led by God to write these books as I hope they will challenge both seekers and believers to pursue a closer relationship with God. The books literally flowed out of me, as the characters developed right in front of me. I don't know how people will respond to the messages God gave me, but it is my prayer that they will challenge the way we view God and enable people to experience the powerful and personal relationship we all can have with Jesus Christ. Thanks for going on the journey with me.

Without giving any spoilers, what can we expect from Fallout? Book two will take up where book one leaves off. I will go into more detail about the great reveal event and take the reader through the fallout of such a momentous moment for the world. Some will embrace the event. Many will try to snuff it out as well as all the SOTH. There may even be some romantic additions to the mix!

What is next after this series? I’m trusting God to lead me as I desire to keep writing books that challenge the daily norms of the faith while incorporating exciting plots and themes. I always want the reader to ask if this is the real part of the book, or if it is fiction. Always keep them guessing is my motto.

What has been the reaction of your church towards your novel? I sent it to one of my mentors, Peter Greer, who runs an international ministry called Hope International. He is an avid writer and reader. He told me the book was great and biblical, and he looked forward to watching how it would challenge believers and seekers as well.

Where can readers find you? My website, Dean Brior, will have the books on it as well as my weekly blog, links to helpful places, and hopefully a podcast if God allows that to happen. I also will have the website in the book, All Things New take people to my website where they can ask questions about the book as they read it.

Any closing comments?

I am blessed and humbled to be given the Spirit-filled Awards for both novels. I plan to keep perfecting the craft of Christian fiction and look forward to how the books are received.

Well, Dean, that was a great interview, very informative and an insight into you as a novelist and more importantly, into the Sect of the Healed Chronicles. I was so captivated by these tomes that I pray readers will be as well. You are welcome back as a guest for any of your future novels. I guess the next visit will be for the final novel to these Chronicles! I am looking forward to this!

Readers and reviews are an author’s best asset, so I encourage any reader, to consider reading Books 1 and 2 of the Sect of the Healed Chronicles and submit a review on Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest (or any other social media you subscribe to).

Reviews help promote an author’s novel to potential readers and encourage the author to keep writing. Reviews also help get the author’s message (and God’s message) to the reader, whether Christian or not, who may need encouragement and support in their lives while being entertained by the story.

About Dean Brior:

I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia at the height of the drug and alcohol surge that happened in the high schools during the 70’s. I was saved from a life of addiction and self-destruction through a youth ministry called Young Life. There I met a group of students and adults that had created a community of love, support, and accountability I had never known before. I experienced Jesus personally and began my journey with him that night in the kitchen of Linda’s house.

I was blessed to win a state wrestling championship which led to a scholarship to UNC Chapel Hill. I got involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and graduated with a degree in education. I taught and coached for several years until I felt the call to full time ministry as the state director of FCA in NC. I was blessed to serve there for 8 years and watch God grow the ministry to over 300 huddles throughout the state.

After we adopted our first child, we felt the need to relocate closer to home in Pennsylvania. God provided an opportunity for me to work with a group of Christian men in the orthopedic device market in Lancaster, PA. I spent 25 years in the surgical arena and was involved in over 10,000 surgeries during that time. I built a distributorship that spanned four states and did 8 million dollars in sales the year we were bought out by the new company. I was involved in three churches while residing in Lancaster PA, and was blessed to serve as God opened doors. It was during this time between jobs that I wrote the first book in the SOTH Initiative. The book flowed out of me as I felt led to share the truths that were communicated through the action and intrigue surrounding the characters in the book. I had never written a book before and did not know how to develop characters or maintain timelines and plot development.  I certainly didn’t understand editing a book and all that goes into creating a coherent story for people to enjoy. I firmly believe God directed my fingers to write these books over the past four years.

In January of 2020, we moved down to Winston Salem to be closer to our grandkids and family. When COVID hit that year I was left with no job, no home, and no future. I started book two in August of 2019. I wrote about a worldwide pandemic 4 months before it actually happened! The books were prepared to be released in the spring of 2020, but COVID changed our plans as we couldn’t afford to pay the cost to publish the books at the time. As of January of 2022, book two is preparing to release this spring. My prayer and hope is that the series would encourage people and challenge them to examine their understanding of God and His active involvement in the creation He loves.

Nancy and I enjoy our home in Pfafftown, NC,  and are thankful for the friends and family He has blessed us with. I plan to obey Gods call to write, teach, counsel and lead as He opens doors and brings new books to my mind.

Created: The Devil's Apprentice, Book 1 by Gregory A. Rogers

Created: The Devil's Apprentice, Book 1.

“In this brilliant novel you will be transported to the first rebellion in heaven… and recognize the spiritual battle within each of us - the desire to worship self more than the God who made us.” – Karol Ladd, Bestselling author, including “Thrive, Don’t Simply Survive” Before "In the beginning..."

Angels waged war against their Creator. Created: The Devil's Apprentice, Book One of the Created series, tells the Biblical story of the battle for sovereignty in Heaven. A young angel, Malachi, witnesses the rise and fall Lucifer, heaven’s “Angel of Light” turned Satan as he wages war against His Creator. Chosen as Lucifer's apprentice, Malachi struggles with his own war of free will and faith. Part adventure story, part parable, this groundbreaking saga offers new insights into why God created anything with a will of its own and why He chose not to sentence Lucifer immediately to Hell after his rebellion, but instead, created our universe and mankind. Bible believers and skeptics will rethink their positions on Creation as they travel from the heights of the Holy Mount to the depths of Hell with Malachi and the heavenly angels. In a fresh interpretation of the spiritual battle for Heaven, Created: The Devil's Apprentice introduces Rogers’ series based on meticulous Biblical scholarship for a fictionalized retelling of the rebellion of Lucifer and his fall from God’s grace.

Perspective by Peter:

I discovered this novel in a Facebook reader's group. As soon as I read the Description, it was a no-brainer to read it. I love this topic of war in heaven and Lucifer's rebellion against God.

As stated in the Description, this is a fresh interpretation of this topic. And I found it the most comprehensive out of all the novels I have read in this arena. I guess one reason for this might be due to the reason Rogers wrote it. I take this from the the novel,

In 2013, Greg was approached by a friend who had recently walked away from Christianity. That friend challenged him to examine the origins of our universe and all it contains. He also asked Greg to review what he thought were contradictory claims in the Bible. In his opinion, if Greg did so, he too would walk away from Christianity. Believing truth could stand up to scrutiny, Greg accepted the challenge and began studying the many perspectives on the subject.

As he did, he noticed each group, believing themselves to be correct, discounted every challenge to their own position, even when those challenges seemed valid. Presuppositions clouded perspectives on every side, and discussions leaned towards upholding existing views rather than seeking truth. For the next 8 years, Greg listened to all sides, renewed his search through the Bible, and challenged every position. In the end, his faith in the God of the Bible grew. Now, in the Created series, Greg offers a fresh perspective, one which seems certain to capture the attention of both theists and atheists alike. “How far will God go to maintain His own perfection?” Will either side accept his theory?

Rogers also addresses the following questions that arose from this challenge:

  • Why would an omniscient God who is perfect in every way ever choose to create the angels and to give them free will?
  • Why did God not just condemn Satan and the fallen angels immediately to Hell following their rebellion against Him?
  • How does the fall of the angels tie into the creation of the universe and the Earth?

So Rogers had a motive to not just tell an entertaining story but to offer an explanation as to why he (and Christians) believe what they do, just as we are instructed to do in 1 Peter 3:15:

And this is where this novel shines. Christian fiction can be very successful in educating, edifying and entertaining. These are the reasons I read Christian fiction. Especially when the Christian author writes with a purpose, knowing that God has given him a mantle to do so. Then it will just not be an entertaining story.

Rogers explores the reason Lucifer rebelled. Lucifer developed the ideology of living for Self and placing your Will above God's will. It explains why Elohim gave the Angels free will and why He gave mankind the same. It shows that Pride can distort the image we have of ourselves, and how Lucifer's view of himself just became more distorted to the point where he believed everything he thought about himself and even that God saw him that way too. I can see why one reviewer stated that this novel convicted him of pride in his life. I can relate to that as well.

Another strength of this novel is the use of the Word of God, specifically verses to base each chapter on and also specific ones, especially from the Beatitudes that destroy the various aspects of Lucifer's prideful claims. Very powerful. I found that I needed to listen and discern these for myself. Just as that reviewer stated, it convicted him of pride in his life, we can see how the Word of God can transform to our fallen state once the redemptive work of Jesus' death on the Cross achieved for us.

Another aspect that was strengthened in me was the attitude of the faithful Angels who choose to live for God and to do His Will and His Will only. And we have the character of Malachi to show us that we need to choose to do this. This angel nearly became the Devil's Apprentice, nearly became totally swayed into the concept of living for Self and seeing Elohim as the tyrant that Lucifer became convinced that He was. But what did Malachi do? He questioned these claims within himself. He asked for the counsel and guidance of Ruach Elohim (the Holy Spirit) to lead him into the Truth of these claims. It was this and the Spirit that showed him the error of his thinking and actions. He repented and turned back to Elohim. I found this to be a powerful but essential tenet of our belief. The Word encourages us to be discerning and wise in all things (James 1: 5) and we need to have embedded in our minds that God's Word is Truth and there is no other. We are encouraged to treasure His Word in our hearts. There are many such verses that instruct us to do so.

Rogers could not have created a narrative of why Lucifer rebelled against God without discussing the backdrop as to why he rebelled: The Sovereignty of Elohim.  As Rogers states in the Introduction of the novel,

".......While He possessed no kingdom of any kind before His creation of heaven, the angels, and mankind, Elohim was, without question, Sovereign. With this simple existence, He was perfectly content. Perfect in every way. So, why does a perfect God who knows all things create anything that has free will, and with it, the capacity to destroy His perfection? The answer to this question both shook and established the pillars of heaven and earth, forever shaping the course of all future events."

This is the launching pad for the rest of the novel including the questions mentioned above. And Rogers offers insights that many of us would not have considered that do show how consistent everything He says and does is out of directly out of Him who He is: God and that Sovereignty is not separate from His Being but is part of His Being. And the justice metered out to Lucifer and the third of the angelic cohort is also part of that Sovereignty and God being Perfect. It is in the remaining novels that Rogers will explore the final claims of Lucifer against God's Perfection and Sovereignty and why He did not sentence Lucifer straight to Hell.

This novel ends well but it is a bit of a cliff-hanger in that we are left with the next stage of the spiritual warfare that Archangel and Malachi decide to instigate. So a sequel is needed. And there is. Five more novels to be exact. Here is the rundown on the next novel:

Created: Heaven and Earth – Book Two.

Angels, both righteous and fallen, engage in military operations focused on framing the real nature of how all things came to be; their target, a small group of men and women whose core beliefs are challenged as the truth about origins is brought to light.

Major Questions Addressed:

1. How can the creation timeline of the Biblical account be reconciled with the cosmological timeline presented by the majority of contemporary scientists?

2. How can the theory of evolution be reconciled with a Biblical creation account which appears to preclude such from being a possibility if the Bible is accurate?

3. How can a fossil record which appears to present death as having occurred for much longer than 6000 years on the Earth be reconciled with the Biblical account of death only entering the world with the fall of Adam?

Rogers is on a winner here. I look forward to the next instalment in this series.

Highly Recommended.
